Preliminary task

I produced a music video to 'Rather Be' by Clean Bandit and Jess Glynne. I also produced a digipack which was a CD featuring the main character from my music video (Stefanie) and the back cover was supposed to look as if it was Jess Glynne and the main girl from Clean Bandit holding hands (Stefanie and Molly). The preliminary task had to be a minimum of 2 minutes which became difficult given that my plan was to get a different person to say each line of the track. My task did end up being 2 minutes but I was restricted on the number actors that would participate in the music video and so some actors were used more than once. If I were to complete the task again I would make sure that the actors were available at the times I needed and were flexible about what lines to sing or actions to perform. This is my finished music video:

I used new techniques for both filming and editing. For filming I used a new camera which meant that I needed to learn the different options for zooming and colour changing, the camera was called a canon HF G25. For editing I used Adobe Premier Pro which was new as I have previously used Final Cut Pro. The processes for clipping and moving clips was different as well as putting in transitions and so I have learnt a completely new editing system. My use of lip syncing was quite good for a first time attempt, but this took time. The most professional looking setting was just the plain white background as this would then draw attention purely to the person singing rather than what was going on in the background. I also preferred when it was 1-3 people rather than more otherwise it looked cluttered and the people were not in-sync with each other which made it look less professional.

I managed to match up the timing of the music with when the baby's Brooke and Ivie were bouncing or running, especially at 1:45 this is shown. However, because I had parts to fill that were instrumental it meant that there were small clips regularly that were of Brooke and Ivie which I didn't think looked like a music video, rather a home made video. If I were to complete it again I would have filmed an instrument, i.e. a violinist while I panned around it to slot in where there was purely instrumental parts of the track.

During production I underestimated how much time perfectly filming each line would take, as I thought it would only involve one take where as it took a few, and more with some people. It was also difficult for people to remember their word which then added to production time. An issue which I faced was the lack of planning which took place before I began filming as I was unsure about who was going to be doing what shot, although I produced a storyboard prior to filming it was probably not detailed enough to actually follow and I should have planned with each line in mind rather than just a rough sketch of scenes. I also did not give much guidance to the actors apart from which line to lip sync and this resulted in some scenes being that two of the actors were doing the same thing but one not (13 seconds.

Since completing my preliminary task I have learnt the importance of completing a detailed plan especially for each line of the music video as the lyrics were key to the actions that went with i.e. the 'no,no,no' part. I have also learnt to allow more time for each line of filming as this will improve the overall video once edited. I will in my final task aim to choose a song that is upbeat and relatively continuous as this will stop the dead space caused while people stop and start new lines. In future if I do this type of music video again I am going to need a much larger number of actors to sing each line, as in my preliminary task I had the same people singing a variety of lines in different parts of the songs, although this may not be noticeable to everyone it is still a problem. In my next task I will need to spend time allocating parts to each of my actors before finding my main actor who is the one who is meant to be singing the genuine song.
